Congressman Jeff Hurd, a freshman representative from Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, brings a personal understanding of rural challenges to Capitol Hill. From humble beginnings bagging groceries in Grand Junction to practicing law in New York City, Hurd’s journey has shaped a deep commitment to the people of southern and western Colorado.
The transition to public office has come with its challenges. Hurd, who serves on three committees, admits the fast pace of Congress was unexpected. “It’s not unusual to be triple- or even quadruple-booked,” he said. Still, he remains focused on the issues that matter most to his constituents.
One of those issues being energy because after returning to Colorado twelve years ago, Hurd saw firsthand how national energy policies were hurting rural communities. “Bad energy policy operates as a hidden tax on rural Coloradans,” he said, citing this impact as a driving force behind his decision to run for Congress. Today, he is working to reverse restrictive policies from the previous administration and promote energy independence. He emphasizes the need for responsible energy development that strengthens both local economies and national security.
Another issue that is at the heart of Hurd’s work is focusing on economic opportunity. Representing one of the largest and most geographically diverse districts in the country, he takes great pride in the region. “It is definitely the most beautiful congressional district in the United States,” he said. Hurd wants families to be able to build their lives in the communities they love, without being forced to relocate for work.
This concern is especially pressing as more young people leave rural areas in search of better opportunities. “The fundamental motivation for my running is to create economic opportunities so that families in southern and western Colorado can grow and thrive,” he explained. His goal is to foster an environment where the next generation can stay close to home and succeed.
In addition to energy and economic opportunities, Hurd believes tax policy plays a critical role in economic development. He supports extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, pointing to its positive impact on working families. In a district where the median income for a family of four is around $71,500, he believes that allowing families to keep more of what they earn is essential to long-term prosperity.
As a father, Hurd understands the desire to keep families together and communities strong. His vision for rural Colorado centers on opportunity, growth, and the ability to thrive close to home. With a deep connection to his district and a focus on practical solutions, Congressman Jeff Hurd is working to ensure that the values and needs of rural Coloradans are heard in Washington.
